An older Asmat feathered hunting basket from Irian Jaya (Dutch New Guinea). The basket is in the shape of an oval cylinder and has a fine diagonal weave. It is in superb condition. The short feathers are accompanied by knots of plant fiber. Collected about 40 years ago. 12" high X 8" in diameter. Photo below. $200

An old Asmat tribal feathered hunting basket from Irian Jaya (Dutch New Guinea). The basket is in the shape of an oval cylinder and has a fine diagonal weave with designs in lighter plant material. It is in wonderful condition. The long feathers (many black-tipped) are accompanied by rings of plant fiber and strung on bird quills with Jobs tears seeds. An old Asmat tribal feathered hunting basket from Irian Jaya (Dutch New Guinea). The basket is in the shape of an oval cylinder and has a fine crisscross weave with designs painted with earthen pigments. It is in fair condition. The strap is broken and missing sections and one set of feathers is missing. The long feathers are strung on black tubes accompanied with Jobs tears seeds.
